Kelly Mitchell

Phase Coordinator: Early Learners & Primary

I started my journey at HPS as a student from Grimsby Institute doing a placement within the Nursery…I then found my passion and desire to work with children with SEND giving all I can to every child and family I work with.  I carried on doing some voluntary work and then was successful in applying for a fulltime Teaching Assistant post at Humberston Park in 1999.  I continued my development and became a Class Team Lead and led the Nursery and Early Years part of the School for several years.

I am a trained Sleep Counsellor who leads a team of other counsellors across the School: the team is responsible for working with parents/carers, advising on, and developing sleep plans for some of the children to support families.

In January 2023 I was appointed into the Leadership Team as Phase Coordinator for Early Learners and Primary.  I co-lead the Curriculum Design & Review Team with my colleague Nicki, who is Phase Coordinator for Secondary & 16-19.

I’m a member of the NELC EHCP Panel for under-5s and support with informing decisions relative to future placements for these youngsters.

I lead on Early Years and Primary outreach, professional support and partnership working for Humberston Park School, working with a range of professionals including leaderships teams and SENCOs in mainstream and special schools / academies across the region.  My specialist areas include autism, cognition and learning strategies for pupils with complex, profound / severe and multiple learning difficulties, Early Years and Primary SEND practice and sleep physiology.

I am also a key member of the Safeguarding Team, trained as a qualified Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead.
