All schools are required by law to teach a broad and balanced curriculum which promotes the spiritual, moral and cultural development of all students, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life. The DfE reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs”. The five Fundamental British Values were first defined by the Government in the 2011 Prevent Strategy.

At Humberston Park School, we promote and reinforce British Values through:

Ensuring all pupils have means and opportunities to communicate and have their voices heard.  We establish and maintain positive relationships within our School and wider community, promoting autonomy for all. Our Student Council meet regularly to discuss ideas, issues and viewpoints of students across the School. Through working together, we demonstrate valuable skills such as listening, compromising, problem solving and empathy to understand and welcome the democratic process.

rule of law iconRule of Law

Promoting the importance of laws, by reinforcing class rules, school procedures and protocols and laws that govern the country to teach students the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us to keep us safe. Visits from outside authorities such as Police and Fire Service help to reinforce this message as well as supporting the teaching of consequences if laws are broken. Enabling our students to distinguish between right and wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England.

Individual Liberty

Providing a safe environment in which students are actively encouraged to make choices and decisions promoting their autonomy. We educate and provide all students with boundaries to ensure students can make choices safely, enabling each individual to develop self-confidence, self-esteem and self-knowledge to make the best choices and decisions which will allow them to become responsible and successful adults in life.

mutual respectMutual Respect

Demonstrating our respect and consideration to all members of our community and the school environment, through displaying good manners, courteous behaviour and welcoming all people in our school community with kindness and equity. We treat all members of our community with dignity and empathy, valuing and celebrating our differences.

Taking great pride in acknowledging and celebrating our differences by valuing ourselves and others, promoting diversity and inclusion of all. We teach and celebrate the diversity of different faiths and cultures through our RE, RSHE and SMSC curriculums, welcoming visitors and guest speakers to enhance this.

At Humberston Park School, we actively challenge students, staff, parents or carers that express opinions contrary to the Fundamental British Values including ‘extremist’ views in line with the Prevent Strategy 2011.
