Special educational needs and disability green paper

posted 15 Feb 2011 02:35 by Matthew Winder   [ updated 18 Mar 2011 04:24 ]

In July 2010 the Government announced there will be a green paper on special educational needs and disability (SEND) in the autumn.

The Green Paper reaffirms the Government's commitment to improving the SEND system and will enable interested parties to discuss the proposals.

Sarah Teather, Children’s Minister, said:

We want to make sure that the most vulnerable children get the best quality of support and care. Children with special educational needs and disabilities should have the same opportunities as their peers. The system needs to be more family friendly so that parents don’t feel they have to battle to get the support their child needs.

To support fundamental changes to the SEN and disability system, ministers are looking at how to identify children’s needs earlier, develop fairer and more transparent funding arrangements, and streamline assessments to make life easier for parents and families.

Ministers are seeking a wide range of views to help them develop proposals for consultation that are practical to implement, reduce bureaucracy and build on current effective practice as well as make the most of the available funds.

For further details on how to contribute your views please visit our e-consultations website.
